ABOUT THE IMAGE: This original background painting with line cel overlay (for definition) and cel painting of Eeyore, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Owl and Tigger were created at the Disney Studios and photographed in making an educational filmstrip distributed to schools by Walt Disney Educational Media Company. In the 1970s–80s this division of WDP produced a series of narrated film strips for schools featuring the characters from the studio's popular Winnie the Pooh animated films. (A second series featured Alice in Wonderland characters.)
The art was created by Disney artists in much the same way as that for animated films: a background painting with line overlay (for definition) and cel painting of characters on 12.5" x 16" sheets with the studio registration holes along the bottom.
These originals are from two (2) different scenes, yet they work well together. Handwritten Studio production notes appear along the bottom of the sheets: "#5 BG38" on the background painting and "CL38" on the overlay, "Pooh #4 FR13 BG 12B" on the cel.
ABOUT THE MEDIUM: Original production cels are one-of-a-kind pieces of art that were used in the creation of an animated film or television show. Each has been hand-painted by studio artists on a piece of celluloid acetate, and has been photographed over a background painting to create a frame of the finished production.
