ABOUT THE IMAGE: "Mickey's 40th Birthday" took a nostalgic look back at the iconic cartoon character we all love. Here is a rare sequence of six original hand-painted production cels of Mickey Mouse with a straw hat and cane from this episode. This is something of a reprise of the 1942 short Mickey's Birthday Party, where he wore a similar outfit. In this sequence, Mickey does a little soft-shoe routine; in the show, his 1928 version dances along with him.

ABOUT THE MEDIUM:  Original Production Cels are one-of-a-kind pieces of art that were used in the creation of an animated film or television show. Each has been hand-painted by studio artists on a piece of celluloid acetate, and has been photographed over a background painting to create a frame of the finished production.
